Peace Core Classes

Along with the typical high school curriculum of language arts, social studies, math, science, and world languages, students at Pacific Buddhist Academy are required to take a sequence of Peace Core class during their first three years. These courses are designed to build leaders for peace by engendering the perspective and qualities necessary to be advocates for change. Whereas each course is shaped by the instructor’s unique experiences and disciplinary expertise, they are all built upon a common educational framework that permeates the sequence. Course titles of the Peace Core classes students might enroll in include:

  • Theory of Peace & Knowledge
  • Social & Political Awareness 
  • The Psychology of Peace & Conflict
  • Radical Movements
  • Social Activism

Peace is often used as an idealistic buzzword, but at Pacific Buddhist Academy we engage with this construct in intentional and practical ways. 

Our peace curriculum is founded upon Buddhist philosophy as well as the latest psychological, sociological, and educational research surrounding peace development. 

Our vision of peace education encompasses two interconnected forms, inner and interpersonal peace. Inner peace entails understandings and awareness of our individual emotions, cultural worldview, thoughts, and behaviors, while contextualizing them within the knowledge of modern psychology and Buddhist philosophy. This engagement with mindful self-awareness goes beyond the studies of most traditional academics, rather engaging the students holistically through rational, emotional, and spiritual inquiry. 

Further, interpersonal peace extends the student’s awareness of the human condition to the external world where actions can be taken to effect change toward harmonious, accepting, and diverse communities. This aspect of peace development focuses the student on recognizing the rippling effect of their day-to-day choices on the broader community and world, and asks students to use that knowledge to enact change today through individual choices, social movements and peace activism.
